Founder of the Sator Group, Matteo Arpe is an Italian banker and business executive.

Biography

Matteo Arpe graduated in Business Administration from Bocconi University. From 1987 to 2000 he built his experience at Mediobanca, rising through the ranks to become central director for extraordinary finance. In 2000 he joined Lehman Brothers as head of Europe Strategic Equity. He has a brother, Fabio, and three children: Elena, Riccardo and Alessandro.[1]

Leadership at Capitalia and academic work

In 2001 he became chief executive officer of Mediocredito Centrale (now MCC) and general manager of the Banca di Roma Group holding company.[2]

The following year he was appointed general manager of Capitalia and, from 2003, also served as its chief executive officer.[3] Since 2004 he has taught Economics of Credit Institutions at Luiss as an adjunct lecturer. In 2006 he blocked a hostile takeover of Banca Intesa by purchasing 2% of its share capital, and in February 2007 he withstood an internal no-confidence attempt. Following approval of the merger with UniCredit, at an exchange ratio of 1.12 to 1, he resigned as CEO of Capitalia on 20 May 2007.

Matteo Arpe and the founding of Sator

On 6 November 2007 Arpe established the Sator financial group, with offices in Rome, Milan and London, alongside Luigi Spaventa.[4] Sator focused on private equity and asset management, with private banking and corporate speciality finance envisaged as further areas of activity. On 6 June 2013 it acquired a stake in Banzai, which included Giornalettismo and Liquida. The Sator Fund entered liquidation on 5 March 2022.[5]
